August is when the peninsula quits pretending it has anything better to do. The back half of summer looks like the good part: dry, sunny, highs in the low 70s, the marine layer burned off by lunch. And the calendar has filled all the way up.

So this issue is the whole month on one page, up top. Every fair, festival, free concert, and food thing worth clearing a weekend for, sorted by when it lands. A few we would build a Saturday around:

The Kitsap Fair & Stampede (Aug 26-30) closes the month the way it always does: carnival, rodeo, Xtreme Bulls, deep-fried everything, and a Thompson Square show that Saturday night. It is the one everybody ends up at eventually.

Chief Seattle Days (Aug 14-16) in Suquamish brings a salmon bake, canoe races, a powwow, and a coastal jam, all free and open to everyone. It has been running for more than a century.

Taste of Kitsap (Aug 7-8) turns the Bremerton boardwalk into the biggest food day on the peninsula. Free to walk in, cheap to graze.

And there is free live music almost every night. Concerts on the Dock in Port Townsend on Thursdays, Kingston Concerts on the Cove on Saturdays, Silverdale at Sunset and Battle Point on Wednesdays, and Poulsbo's Summer Nights at the Bay signing off Aug 11. Bring a blanket and pick a waterfront.

The Rundown

Kitsap Is Getting Its First Chick-fil-A

Bremerton is in line for the county's first Chick-fil-A, a roughly 4,900-square-foot store with two drive-through lanes, a playground, and around a hundred parking spots. Target is fall. Whatever you think of the chicken, the drive-through backup onto the road is going to be its own local event.

Two Local Kitchens Got a James Beard Nod

Trinh and Thai Nguyen, the siblings behind Ba Sa on Bainbridge and Pho T&N in Poulsbo, were named James Beard semifinalists this year for Best Chef: Northwest & Pacific. They did not advance to the finals, but a semifinalist nod is about as close as the food world gets to a national spotlight, and this one landed on a family that also runs a strip-mall pho counter in Poulsbo. Go order the pho and feel smug about it.

Ground Broke on Silverdale's Clearwater Market

The Suquamish Tribe has started building a new Clearwater Market in Silverdale, extending the retail footprint it runs alongside the casino. If you have driven past the site and wondered what was going in, that is it.

A free, self-guided loop of working farms, now in its fourth year. Pet the goats, buy the honey, see where your market haul actually comes from.

Regional indie bookstores and local authors set up on the waterfront the morning after Taste of Kitsap. Make it a boardwalk double-header.

Also this weekend: the West Sound Film Festival screens indie shorts and features at the Roxy and SEEfilm downtown (Aug 7-9, ticketed), and Bainbridge Arts & Crafts opens SALT, a group show about where the Salish Sea meets the land, with a free reception Friday evening.

Also that Saturday (Aug 15): Port Townsend's Uptown Street Fair fills the uptown blocks with art, music, and a farmers market for its 41st year, with a Kiwanis classic car show parked alongside it.

· FAFO Kitchen in Silverdale is the table everyone keeps name-dropping right now, all creative, technique-driven plates. Believe the hype before the wait gets worse.

· Rockin' Ruby's quietly moved to a new spot in downtown Winslow, now right next to Bainbridge Apothecary & Tea. Same store, new door.

· Downtown Bainbridge just wrapped its summer Where's Waldo? hunt across 25 Winslow shops, with the grand-prize drawing on Aug 1. If your kid is still clutching a stamp card, that's the deadline.

Seasonal Guide: Free Blackberries

The best free food on the peninsula ripens this month. Himalayan blackberries take over every sunny trail edge, alley, and roadside from about mid-August on, and because they are a noxious weed, nobody minds if you strip a bush bare. The Clear Creek Trail in Silverdale and the old rail grades around Poulsbo are thick with them, and the ripe ones come off with no effort at all, so if you have to tug, leave it. Bring a container with a lid, wear sleeves you do not care about, and pick above knee height, away from car exhaust and the sprayed edges. A pie's worth is about twenty minutes of work. Then go home and make the pie.

The Tides

The deep morning minus tides come back the week of Aug 10, the best beach walking of the month. One hard rule before you bring a bucket, though.

So: no bucket. But a minus tide is still the best time to walk a beach, and these are the windows.

Predictions from NOAA station 9445303 (Seabeck, Seabeck Bay). Guillemot Cove sits on the same water, so time that walk to the bottom of one of these and you get twice the beach.

Ferry Watch

Kingston: grab your boarding pass first. If you are driving on at Kingston, you need a boarding pass before you reach the ticket booth, daily 8am to 8pm through Oct 12. It keeps ferry traffic from stacking through town. Kingston side only. Coming back from Edmonds, just get in line.

Everything else is just busy. It is peak season, and sunny weekends bring the longest car waits of the year on Bainbridge. Walk on if you can, or aim early or late. Bremerton usually has the shorter line if you have the option. One heads-up: elevators 1 and 2 at Colman Dock are out of service, so if you need step-free access, check the terminal alerts before you travel.

Hood Canal Bridge: open and running. The center-lock rehab work runs into the fall, so if you are headed to Port Gamble or points west, give yourself a few minutes of buffer for a possible opening and glance at the status page before you go.
